Sustainable Workplace
With over 4,500 staff the University staff population is larger than most small country towns. It is not only the size of the staff population but also their key role as educators, and facilitators of the student population which makes them fundamental to addressing sustainability at the University. This website aims to provide staff a wealth of information and ideas about how to address sustainability, in their workplace, their daily lives, and also as part of the teaching experience in order to not only sustain leading education, but also to educate for sustainability.
Sustainable Workplace Team
The Sustainable Workplace initiative builds on the University's commitment to sustainability through developing the capacity of all staff to become active contributors to local workplace solutions to the pressing global environmental problems, such as climate change, environmental pollution and the degradation of natural resources.
The Sustainable Workplace Team is made up of staff representatives from most faculties and service units across the University. These people are the first point of contact for their colleagues on sustainability issues in the workplace. They are trained to provide support and information on environmental matters and to be a voice for staff in developing new workplace programs and policies. Each team member has the job of working with their fellow staff to implement an appropriate approach to sustainability that is specific to their roles and workplaces.
Staff initiatives may include;
- Sourcing more environmentally sustainable copier paper for your office print room,
- Developing a car pool within the workplace to reduce the emissions associated with travelling to work,
- Encouraging the use of videoconference as an alternate to flying to meetings in order to reduce the university’s carbon emission.
- For more ideas explore our interactive website.
The Sustainable Workplace Team program was launched on the 10th, September 2009, and now has over 60 staff representatives. Read the news story for more details on the launch.
