Why are there particular charges for venues on campus?
In 2001, the University conducted a review of all charges related to room hirings. This review revealed that the University had for many years failed to cover the real costs of cleaning, attendant charges and ongoing maintenance to the fabric of its buildings by hiring out its facilities well below real cost.
With input from different groups within the University and outside consultants, a schedule of charges was devised that applies across the University. This schedule attempts to cover real operational costs in an equitable way and distinguishes between purely commercial hirings and access by a wide variety of groups that have an association with the University. A subsequent review in 2003 refined the original schedule of charges and came into effect on the 1st February 2004.
Can a private individual or non-University organisation or company hire a venue at the University of Sydney?
Yes. While priority is given to the University community for its core business of teaching, our venues are available for hire to private individuals for such events as weddings. Other organisations also hire our facilities for meetings, conferences, seminars, dinners, balls, concerts, product launches, etc. While availability of our venues can be limited during teaching periods, between terms and during the summer months there is greater flexibility with regards to room availability.
Can I bring my own caterer onto the grounds or is there a specific panel of caterers?
If you wish to use the Darlington Centre and intend to have catering, you will be required to use the caterers who manage this venue and are directly employed by the University.
However, for all other venues within campus directly controlled by the University of Sydney, there is an open policy with regards to the use of caterers. It is preferred that any caterer using the University's facilities maintains a Gold Licence or at least be an active member of a relevant industry organisation.

Why can't I book a venue for years in advance?
Timetabled classes have priority with regards to bookings in the majority of our venues. Due to the allocation of timetable classes that are processed every year, most of our venues have to be kept available for this core University activity. Once this process is complete, the remaining capacity is made available for others to book.
What AV facilities are available within a certain venue?
You can check these facilities on our timetable website. Under the General Information heading, select the Examine Venue Details option. By indicating the venue of interest, the facilities within the venue will be displayed.
