Traffic Management and Disability Access Plan
A new Traffic Management and Disability Access Plan, proposing to provide safer pedestrian movement and greater access for disabled staff, students and visitors, is now available for comment.
Over the past 12 months, CIS have been working closely with consultants and key stakeholders to identify and discover potential hazards to pedestrian movement and disabled access throughout the Camperdown and Darlington campuses. This also included consulting with University Para Olympian athletes, to gain a first hand look at the hazards they encounter when travelling through the University, via a wheelchair.
The Traffic Management Plan indicates proposed traffic calming measures aimed at providing safer pedestrian and bicycle movement through the Camperdown and Darlington Campuses, additionally reducing traffic flow of vehicles through the University.
The Disability Access Plan highlights the proposed access upgrades for disabled staff, students and visitors, CIS will be focusing on.
The major highlights of the above plans include:
- The introduction of some one-way traffic arrangements throughout the University, thus improving the traffic flow and the safety for staff and students
- Widening of some of the footpaths, encouraging more pedestrian activity, and allowing for increased disabled access across the campuses
- Improvement in security at the university entrance and exists points
- An increase in the number of traffic calming devices, slowing down traffic that passes through the University.
As there are significant costs involved in the implementation of the Traffic Management and Disabled Access Plans, CIS will be seeking to progressively implement the proposed changes, based on safety and financial factors, over a period of four years.
