Stages one and two of the replacement of damages trees within the vicinity of Oval No 1 and 2 on the Camperdown Campus, has now been completed.

We are now commencing stage three, where a further 22 trees will be replaced with mature native Angophoras.

The third and fourth stage of replacement will commence on Sunday 23 August. Due to the location of the work, Western Avenue will be closed from Science Road intersection to Manning Road, with diversions in place.

The replacement plantings have been inspected by the City of Sydney Council, which has authorised the next stage of the replacement program to proceed.

Stage one and two replacement trees

Stage One and Two

Please be informed that stage one and two of the replacement of the trees around University Oval No.1 and University Oval No.2 will commence Saturday 4 July at 8.00am.

Due to recent tree collapses within the vicinity of Oval No 1 and No 2 on the Camperdown Campus, an assessment of all trees within the area was completed by an independent arborist.

The assessment found that many trees have reached or gone beyond their lifecycle and recommended removal of these trees due to the safety hazard they pose to staff, students and visitors to campus.

As a result, we will be replacing a number of trees in this area with the most significant impact around Oval No 2 where most of the current trees need to be replaced.

The Southern Blue Gums which are creating a safety hazard, will be replaced with mature Angophoras which, as native trees, will be more conducive to the locale and environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do the trees need to be replaced?
An independent arborist recently assessed all trees within the vicinity of the ovals, following recent tree collapses on the
Camperdown Campus. The assessment found that many trees have reached or gone beyond their lifecycle and recommended the removal
of these trees due to the safety hazard they pose to staff, students and visitors.

What replacement trees will you plant and how big will they be?
We will replace the Southern Blue Gums with mature Angophora floribunda (Rough barked apple), which are native to the local area.
The mature Angophoras are approximately five metres tall. These will be regularly maintained and pruned by grounds staff to ensure
the safety of students, staff and visitors to the University.

What are you going to do with the wood?
The wood from the trees that are being replaced will be recycled.

When you are replacing the current trees, are you going to look for wildlife that may live in the trees?
Yes, the University and the NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) will thoroughly search through the
foliage of the Southern Blue Gums to ensure we rehouse all wildlife that call the trees home.

Should you have any questions, or require any further information, please contact the University Grounds Manager, Mark Moeller on 0418 694 929.
