Campus 2010 Camperdown public domain works update

Notice: Camperdown001 16/11/2006 - Parking adjustments

Part of the Campus 2010 projects, the construction of the Camperdown Public Domain commenced in April 2007.

Works:
This project, more than others Campus 2010 projects, has a significant impact on the University community transforming Eastern Avenue into traffic-free, parking-free zone.
This new pedestrian thoroughfares has new tree planting, furniture, lighting, lawns and water features. It is a safe, accessible and attractive area to pass through or to linger. Adjoining areas, such as the Fisher Library forecourt, are also upgraded to blend in with their new surroundings.

Impact:
The impact of this project will be considerable, in particular during construction we will experience:
  • Loss of parking spaces in the Camperdown Campus
  • Limited pedestrian access to the area
  • No general vehicular access to the area
  • Noise and other related inconvenience.

While the works will be staged to avoid as much as possible problems during delicate periods like lectures or exams, the impact on the everyday life of the university students and staff alike will be unavoidable.

During construction, parking will be lost along all Eastern Avenue, along most of Fisher Road and in the forecourt of The Quadrangle.

While there will be an overall reduction of parking spaces on campus until the new 420 car spaces parking station (under the Law Building) opens in late 2008, the recent increase in casual parking rates has freed up a significant amount of parking for permit holders.
In particular the Shepherd Street parking station combined with the SIT parking station (400 spaces totals), often has a substantial number of parking spaces available.
