Lost and Found

General information

The Lost Property office is part of the Security Services Administration Unit.

A large number of items are found each day and handed in to various authorities within the University. Some of these items are kept for a short period in the area where they are first located, but eventually, all unclaimed items arrive in the Lost Property Office.

These items are recorded onto a database and if possible matched to items reported as lost. Items that are handed in and not claimed by their lawful owner within three months may be claimed by the finder for an administration charge, currently $5.00.

Persons handing in lost property will need to ensure that their personal details are recorded at the Lost Property Office, together with a clear indication that they wish to claim the item if the owner cannot be located. Any property that remains unclaimed by either the lawful owner or the finder after three months may be sold at lost property sales that are held from time to time. These sales are widely advertised within the University.

Reporting found property

Found property may be handed in at faculty or department offices. It may also be handed to precinct officers, security officers, or delivered to the Lost Property office in the Security Services Administration Unit. When handing property in, finders should indicate if they want to claim the property after three months. Finder's details will be recorded so that the finder can be notified if the property remains unclaimed after three months.

A record will be made of any valuable property handed in. The property will be inspected and listed in the presence of the finder and the person receiving the property. Both people will sign the record and a copy should be kept by both parties. All monies handed in must be counted and recorded in the manner described above. The Lost Property office maintains a property receipt book for these purposes. Security patrol officers are issued with notebooks that can serve as interim records of found property.
