Precinct services

General information

The University precinct officers are organised into two main groups as follows:
  • Centrally managed - the information in these pages relates to this group.
  • Faculty managed - not dealt with in these pages. For enquiries about services provided by this group please contact the relevant faculty, department or those attendants directly.
The precinct officers support building infrastructure and teaching functions. Their duties are to:
  • Ensure teaching areas are maintained and serviced.
  • Ensure teaching areas are clean and that chalk and dusters are available.
  • Clean blackboards and whiteboards.
  • Open and close buildings and provide access to areas for authorised persons.
  • Provide building mail delivery/collection services.
  • Support the provision of audiovisual services.
  • Provide basic building caretaker and security services with routine internal patrols of buildings.
  • Ensure building infrastructure is maintained and serviceable - report faults for correction.
  • Ensure building services are provided.
  • Provide paper collection services.
  • Provide furniture removal services where the need for a contractor is not indicated.
  • Provide local information and direction services as appropriate.
  • Provide support to Emergency Services responding to incidents.
Precinct officers are managed by the Site Services group within Campus Infrastructure Services.

Precinct officers are managed by precinct supervisors who are each responsible for a building or a group of buildings. Precinct rosters and service delivery is the direct responsibility of each supervisor. Any routine enquiry relating to a particular building or group of buildings should be directed to the precinct supervisor or the precinct officer servicing the particular building (refer to Contact Details).

The buildings serviced by precinct officers are generally determined on the basis of geographic location rather than faculty or college allocation. It is common, however, that a group may take in a large part of a particular faculty because of the relative location of buildings servicing that organisation. Any faculty or department located in a serviced building may seek the support of the precinct staff within that building.

Precinct staff are generally located in offices that are readily accessible to all building users. These offices are frequently (not always) located on the ground floor near the front door. The precinct staff are readily identifiable, wearing blue uniforms with the University crest on the shirt/ jumper pocket.

Central car pool

The University has a central car pool where vehicles may be hired by faculties and departments on a user pays basis. The vehicles are generally provided on a short term basis, however, longer term hire is also provided.

The service is managed by the Yeoman Bedell and operates from his office in the Quadrangle. Vehicles are often available at short notice in emergencies, however, bookings are required in the normal course of business. A diverse range of vehicles is available. Current rates of hire and vehicle availability may be ascertained by contacting the office of the Yeoman Bedell (refer to: "Contact Details").

Executive drivers

An Executive Driver Service for the University's senior executive is operated from the Office of the Yeoman Bedell. The drivers are rostered and supervised from that office. Vehicles allocated to support the service are also managed and maintained by the Yeoman Bedell.

Dry Ice delivery

The ordering and delivery of dry ice is managed from the Office of the Yeoman Bedell. View Details of this service or download form to order.

Examination support

Precinct staff provide support services to examinations. These services are managed through the precinct staff in the Carslaw Building in consultation with Student Services. Additional examination support services are provided by the Security Patrol.
