EARTH HOUR 2009 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY

This year The University of Sydney will continue to support Earth Hour through ongoing involvement in the event and our commitment to sustainability. Between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March 2009, we will turn off lighting in a selection of buildings. Campus Infrastructure Services will ensure that, as much as possible, building lights are switched off for the event. Staff are invited to help out by switching off all unnecessary lighting at that time.

WHAT EARTH HOUR IS ABOUT

The University of Sydney participated in Earth Hour 2008 as an important expression of our commitment to sustainability. Between 8 and 9 pm on Saturday 29 March 2008, we turned off all floodlighting on buildings and as many non-essential lights, both internal and external, in as many buildings as possible across all campuses.

The University of Sydney thanks all staff and students who participated in Earth Hour and helped to make it the success that it was. Photos taken with our webcam show how dark the University was during the event.

There were no security issues reported and any lights that were on during the event were required for safety reasons.

We wish to thank all those staff and students who we know reliably turn off lights and unused equipment as a matter of course.

The University of Sydney will continue to support Earth Hour through ongoing involvement in the event and our commitment to sustainability.
