Heritage

The Heritage Office provides advice on planning and conservation for the heritage listed buildings and grounds. The office works within the Planning Unit to coordinate and manage heritage policy and projects on behalf of the Campus Infrastructure and Services and University.

The office maintains close links with architects, engineers, building industry, councils, NSW Heritage Office, university community and the public to ensure that best practice is employed to maintain the University’s heritage.

The University of Sydney, Australia’s first, is unique in its concentration of heritage listed buildings and campus many of which are of state or national significance. The University is proud of its heritage and committed to the conservation of these buildings and grounds. As part of its Capital Works Program the University has adopts a five (5) year plan for conservation projects on an annual basis.

The office is the point of contact for all heritage buildings matters and services the University Heritage Advisory Group.

SYDNEY UNIVERSITY HAMS (Heritage Asset Management Strategy)

This document, prepared in accordance with the requirements of the NSW Heritage Act 1977, responds to the requests of the State Agency Heritage Guide, issued by the Heritage Council of NSW in December 2004.

The Heritage Asset Management Strategy process has been formulated by the NSW Heritage Office in consultation with the NSW State Treasury to assist state government agencies including the universities to conserve and maintain their assets. The Heritage Asset Management Strategy is the guiding document that describes how the heritage assets will be conserved and maintained.

The Sydney University HAMS was submitted and approved by the NSW Heritage Office in 2006.

SECTION 170 REGISTER

The University of Sydney is required to maintain a Heritage and Conservation Register under section 170 of the NSW Heritage Act 1977 (the S170 Register). This Register lists The University of Sydney’s assets which have been identified as having State or local heritage significance.

The University of Sydney Heritage Register is available to be searched.

CONSERVATION PROGRAM

The heritage office implements a program of conservation works and conservation plans and prepares the university strategic asset management plan for the heritage assets. These projects include:

  • Implementation of maintenance to the external fabric of buildings as determined by the 1999 Heritage Fabric Survey.
  • Advice to project managers, CIS staff and consultants on the design and construction of new buildings and refurbishments in existing buildings.
  • Advice on planning.
  • Conservation Management Plans.

HERITAGE ADVISORY GROUP

The Heritage Advisory Group was formed in 2008 by Campus Infrastructure Services to act as a project control group for

  • heritage policy and projects, and
  • university wide built environment initiatives

It has the task of reviewing university wide initiatives and heritage conservation program and policies on behalf of the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Campus Infrastructure and Services and the university community.
