Campus 2010 goals

Quadrangle Eastern Archway

Quadrangle, South Vestry

The Campus 2010 program has three clear goals:

Creating a better campus environment

The Darlington and Camperdown campuses are an architectural sampler representing the diverse architectural styles of the University's 150 year history.

One of the features of the early master plans for campus was the use of sight lines and vistas, giving a sense of visual order and landmarks for ease of navigation.

Campus 2010 will restore and strengthen those perspectives and the clear markers of spires and towers. Lines of sight will include vistas from Sydney Central to the Law School in one direction and to the Old Darlington School on Maze Green; views from Eastern Avenue through Victoria Park to the CBD, and views from City Road through to University Place and the Quadrangle.

Pedestrian thoroughfares
Vibrant pedestrian thoroughfares are being built to unite the various parts of the campus. Through the Public Domain project, 30,000 square metres of open space will be upgraded. From the University's back gate at Shepherd Street an elevated timber boardwalk will sweep pedestrians through Maze Green up to the Sydney Central Building. From there a new, wheelchair accessible footbridge will provide access across City Road. Once across, pedestrians will follow the new Eastern Avenue Boulevard featuring seating, lighting and water features, through to the Fisher Library and Quadrangle.

A new transport hub, underground parking in the Law School and the centralising of student services and library facilities in the Sydney Central Building will reclaim the campus for pedestrian traffic.

Design excellence
By providing flagship buildings and open spaces reflecting design excellence, the University aims to enrich and inspire campus users and visitors.

A better balance between buildings and open spaces will make the campus a more pleasant environment. Along with improved open spaces, the design will make it easier for all users to access every part of the campus. New facilities such as shops and cafes and open spaces suitable for entertainment, meeting, gathering, events etc. will open up a new level of interaction on the campus.

Supporting academic excellence

All buildings which form the Campus 2010 project will offer state of the art teaching and study facilities, providing staff and students with quality work environments that support excellence in research and teaching.

Purpose-built lecture spaces (for instance the new Moot Court), extensive computer and research laboratories, effective climate control, ventilation, natural lighting and open spaces will all contribute to the improved environment.

Easier access to University libraries will be another outcome of Campus 2010. The new Law Library in the Law School will link to the Fisher Library creating a combined Humanities complex. The new Sydney Central building will house a combined Science and Technology Library, merging collections currently spread across seven locations.

Student services such as accommodation, counselling and international student support will be brought together in the new Sydney Central building. The purpose built facilites are close to the new transport hub, food and retail outlets.

Reaching out to the community

First impressions count. The improvements made by Campus 2010 will deliver a new public face to the community. The Sydney Central building, the School of Information Technologies and the Shepherd Street boardwalk will create an inviting gateway on the south-eastern side of campus.

The City Road entrance will be upgraded in line with the transformation of Eastern Avenue, while the Law School will be a distinctive presence opening up the campus to Victoria Park.

The changes will see the University of Sydney become an even more inviting space to enter, as well as presenting an image that is in keeping with its premium position as a leading University and a valued member of the community.

Stronger links with the community, alumni, professional associations, industry and government will be forged by creating a hub of activity on campus and making facilities available to all: encouraging University and community markets, exhibitions and events to be held on campus.
