The vision
Directly in front of the historic Quadrangle, University Place will become a pedestrian district. New paving will create an elevated plaza overlooking University Place and beyond to the Sydney skyline.
A green buffer of grass between the Quadrangle and the new pavement will provide a visual border to the building as well as protect the sandstone walls. The footpaths crossing the grassed areas of University Place will have the historic look of gravel yet be made of a more durable material to withstand heavy pedestrian use.
The roadways around University Place will be reconfigured to allow for limited vehicle access while making conditions safer for pedestrians and providing comoplete accessibility for disabled users. A generous paved reception area will accommodate large numbers of people arriving at University Place from the new Eastern Avenue boulevard.
The road directly in front of the Quadrangle will be replaced with a single lane, granite paved roadway allowing access for drop off and pick up in front of the Quadrangle. The current tangle of roads at the junction of Eastern Avenue and University Place will be simplifed to reduce traffic/pedestrian conflict.
The works

The area immediately in front of the Quadrangle will be closed to both pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The area will be landscaped and a single carriage paved road will replace the existing roadway.
