Cross Campus Connection

Start date: September 2007
Completion date: March 2008
For the first time ever, pedestrians will be able to follow a continuous pathway from the Shepherd Street entrance at the southeastern corner of the Darlington campus, right through to the Fisher Library and the Quadrangle, the symbolic heart of the University.
The Cross Campus Connection will unite the Darlington and Camperdown campuses, provide an inviting entrance to the local community and create an environment that supports the University’s 1:5:40 aspiration.
The works
Sweeping from the Shepherd Street entrance, a stunning, elevated boardwalk takes pedestrians through the re-developed Maze Green amphitheatre to the new Sydney Central building.
From here, a glass lift travels up to the Sydney Central Plaza, where a second glass lift rises to take people to the new bridge spanning City Road. The new bridge, like the rest of the Cross Campus Connection, is fully wheelchair accessible.
Once across the bridge, pedestrians pass through a new landscaped plaza inside the City Road entrance and along the newly transformed Eastern Avenue boulevard, passing the new Law School on the way to Fisher Library and University Place in front of the Quadrangle.

The City Road footbridge
The existing City Road footbridge will be demolished once lectures and exams finish at the end of 2007. Pedestrians will be diverted to the City Road crossings at the lights by the bus shelters. Signage inside Wentworth will direct people to the City Road exit.
Construction of the new footbridge will happen during the summer semester and it will open at the end of February 2008.
The footbridge between Wentworth and the Biochemistry building is not being demolished, and is unaffected by the Campus 2010 construction program.
All facilities and shops in the Wentworth building will be open during the redevelopment.
Relocation of the City Road gates
The new City Road footbridge meets the end of Eastern Avenue at an open plaza, marked with a simple water basin. To create this plaza, the gates on City Road marking the entrance to Eastern Avenue are moving in mid-September back to their original location in Victoria Park.
The three large pillars will once again flank the entrance to the park at the corner of City Road and Broadway. The two smaller pillars (never part of the original gate set), will also relocate to Victoria Park and will frame stairs running up from the park to the new Law School.
The existing vehicle entry and gatehouses to the west of the new plaza remain. A new drop-off area will be created inside the entry to allow campus visitors to arrive safely by car.
